If you live in New Jersey and have heard scratching sounds behind your walls at night, you are not imagining things. Mice are surprisingly agile, and yes, they can absolutely climb walls. Understanding how they do it, and where they are likely to enter, is the first step to protecting your home.
How Mice Climb
Mice are built for vertical movement. Their sharp claws grip textured surfaces with ease, and their tails act as natural balancers that help them scale walls without losing footing. They are also lightweight, which makes pulling themselves upward far less effort than it would be for a heavier animal. On top of climbing, mice can jump up to 2 feet and squeeze through openings as small as a quarter inch.
Surfaces They Can and Cannot Climb
Not every wall is fair game. Mice are selective climbers based on what gives their claws traction.
Surfaces mice can climb:
- Brick walls, thanks to rough texture and mortar joints
- Stucco, wood, and rough concrete
- Drywall and most interior wall materials
Surfaces mice cannot climb:
Why This Matters for NJ Homes
New Jersey homes vary widely by city and construction era. In older neighborhoods in Clifton and Hackensack, brick exteriors and aging foundations give mice plenty of grip to climb toward attic vents and upper-floor entry points. Dense housing in Bergen County towns like Bergenfield and Paramus means mice displaced from one property can quickly move to another. In Fort Lee, where apartment buildings and older multi-unit structures are common, mice use interior wall voids as private highways between floors and units.
Where Mice Enter After Climbing
Once a mouse scales your exterior wall, it looks for any gap to slip through. Common entry points include:
- Attic vents and roof lines
- Gaps around utility pipes and wiring
- Cracks near window frames or door thresholds
- Gutters and downspouts used as ladders
How to Stop Them
Sealing entry points is the most effective long-term defense. Use steel wool, metal mesh, or caulk around any opening wider than a dime. Trim trees and shrubs away from your home’s exterior so mice cannot use branches as a bridge to your walls. Check your foundation, siding, and utility lines at least once a season, since NJ homes naturally develop new cracks over time.
